THE GALINA ULANOVA FOUNDATION
was set up in 1998 by the Bolshoi Theatre, the Union of Theatre People of Russia, The Pushkin Museum of the Fine Arts, Ekaterina Maximova, Vladimir Vasiliev, Boris Lvov-Anokhin, Elena Bruskova, Tatyana Kasatkina.
The main aim of the Foundation is to perpetuate the memory of Galina Sergeyevna Ulanova and to preserve her creative and spiritual legacy. The Foundation is drawing up several programs and working out directions for its work in the future. The Foundation intends to establish the following long-term programs: yearly Galina Ulanova grants for pupils at ballet schools; award ‘For selfless service to the art of dance’ presented together with the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory annually for five most prominent figures in dance for the outstanding achievements in choreographic art; a Galina Ulanova World Dance Centre in Moscow; a chain of ballet studios and schools for the aesthetic education of children; and to assist in the social rehabilitation of senior dancers. The Foundation also plans to organize exhibitions, festivals, concerts and evenings in memory of Galina Ulanova or linked with her name and to publish printed matter on, and make films and videos about, her life and work.
One of the most important directions of the Foundation’s activities in the immediate years ahead are preparations for the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ulanova which will be celebrated on 8 January, 2010.
As one of the events linked with this anniversary, the Foundation is preparing a project for presentation to the relevant state authorities for a statue of Ulanova to be put up in Moscow and for a street in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia’s two main cities which are directly linked to her life and work, to be named after her.
Due to the increase in the Foundation’s activities and the change in its status, its Board of Trustees has been considerably enlarged. Among its members are such outstanding personalities and arts people as: Maurice Bejart, John Neumeier, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Natalya Makarova, Valery Gergiev, Ekaterina Maximova, Viktor Sadovnichy, Vladimir Gusev, Boris Lyubimov, Margarita Eskina, Tadatsugu Sasaki.
The Galina Ulanova Foundation invites cooperation from all those who cherish the name and work of the great ballerina, who was to become a symbol not only of Russian ballet but of world culture overall, its unique and true treasure.
